The Experience That Deepened My Interest in Natural Wellness

The Experience That Deepened My Interest in Natural Wellness

My interest in natural wellness became deeply personal after my daughter developed a skin infection that appeared to have come from daycare. We took her to the doctor, but her regular provider was unavailable, so she was seen by another physician. Unfortunately, the condition was misdiagnosed, and the prescribed treatment made her skin significantly worse.

I had always been extremely careful about caring for my daughter’s skin. After she was born, we gently rubbed in her vernix and waited until we were home to give her a full bath. We wanted to protect her delicate skin as much as possible. Seeing it become irritated and damaged after one incorrect diagnosis was heartbreaking. The condition eventually began to resemble severe eczema.

Determined to find answers, I took her to a dermatologist. The dermatologist recommended a prescription cream that carried serious warnings, and I did not feel comfortable using it at that time. I respectfully declined and explained that I wanted to research gentler options and formulate a moisturizing body butter for her.

The dermatologist cautioned me that I might not be able to improve the condition and that my daughter could be left with permanent scarring. I remained hopeful and replied, “We are going to be okay.”

She asked us to return in six months so she could evaluate my daughter’s skin. I agreed—especially because she was so certain that my approach would not work. I quietly accepted the challenge.

Over the next six months, I devoted time to researching ingredients and carefully creating multiple batches of body butter. I paid close attention to how my daughter’s skin responded and continued refining the formulation. This was not a quick experiment; it was a patient process guided by a mother’s determination to find a gentle approach that worked for her child.

When we returned to the dermatologist six months later, my daughter had no visible scarring and no remaining signs of the previous skin condition. It was an incredibly affirming moment for me.

That experience strengthened my appreciation for the resources found in nature and helped inspire my journey into women’s health and wellness herbalism. I believe God has provided us with many useful plants and natural ingredients, and I love learning how they may support our bodies when they are researched, prepared, and used responsibly.

I also believe that natural wellness and medical care do not have to compete with one another. Every person and condition is different, and professional evaluation is important—especially when treating an infection, a child, or a persistent skin concern. For my family, however, this experience demonstrated the value of asking questions, advocating for our child, carefully researching our options, and remaining actively involved in decisions about her care.
