Homebirth facts

Many beautiful Mommies ask me my opinion on whether they should have a homebirth or not. I am all for a beautiful birth. I do believe you should consider everything to make sure the decision your making is what is best and safe for you and baby. Here are my thoughts on Homebirth with some facts that can be helpful.

Bringing a new life into the world is an awe-inspiring experience. For many mothers, the idea of giving birth at home is an attractive option. Homebirth is a safe and natural alternative to a hospital birth. It provides expectant mothers with a comfortable, familiar environment to give birth in. Let's take a look at some facts about homebirth.

Firstly, it is important to note that homebirth is not for everyone. Women with high-risk pregnancies should give birth in a hospital, where they can receive the appropriate level of care. However, studies have shown that for low-risk pregnancies, homebirth can be just as safe as a hospital birth. In fact, homebirth may even be safer for some women, as there is less risk of infection and unnecessary medical interventions.

Another great benefit of homebirth is the level of control it gives the mother. In a hospital setting, the mother may feel like a passive observer in her own birth experience. At home, the mother can decide who will be present, what kind of atmosphere she wants, and what kind of pain relief she prefers. This level of control can help the mother feel more relaxed and confident during the birth process.

Finally, homebirth can be a much more cost-effective option than a hospital birth. Hospital births can be expensive, and even with insurance, the costs can quickly add up. Homebirth, on the other hand, is often much more affordable. Additionally, many midwives who provide homebirth services offer payment plans and other options to make the process more accessible for all families.

In conclusion, homebirth can be a safe, empowering, and cost-effective option for low-risk pregnancies. If you are considering homebirth, it is important to do your research and find a qualified midwife who can provide you with the care and support you need. With the right preparation and support, a homebirth can be a beautiful and memorable experience for both mother and child.

Doula Dad?

DOULA DAD?
Can it be  such a thing?

I am asked pretty often by Expecting fathers "Why do we need a doula"? I have to remind them there is more to being a doula than standing in the room. Having a doula present is invaluable. The misunderstanding is they believe the Nurse, Physician or Midwife will be able to help them in all situations. You have to understand if your not the only patient in labor their time is divided between all patients. The staff are really clinicians. Their goal is to make sure you and baby are healthy not to make sure your baby isn't sunnyside up, in a funky position that is stalling labor or your anxious about something.  As Your Doula we offer so much to the birth not just telling a mom to breath. Consider this for me. We offer comfort measures, affirming, we also assist mom during labor. We can pick up on if labor has changed course. We fight for a little time to allow your body to respond to changes made. Dad, this doesn't take away from your love and affection. We as doulas acknowledge it, value it and we tap into it when is necessary.

Dad, when you have a doula you have a team member. You know your wife better than anyone. The Doula will rely on this knowledge. We Doulas are their to support, encourage, advocate and create an environment that is best for you and your family as you welcome your little bundle of joy. You will not be left out; this will allow you to experience the birth instead of working during the birth. It can be hard work trying to remember did I give her water? Did she change positions? does baby like this position? What to do to offer her comfort? Why do they want to break her water? There is a lot more to being a doula than people know. We know how things are going while your beautiful wife is laboring. We know when to suggest she should get in to the shower etc.

Doulas do more than rub your feet and back. We don't just sit at your wife bed side. I make sure every Family has what is best. If your wife isn't comfortable with having an IV, If its not medically necessary I will  provide you all with the information to make sure she doesn't have the IV. You don't want to do your vaccine at hospital you would like your family physician to handle this, I am there to remind the staff of this plan. You want a delayed cord clamp. I am not caught in the moment I am their repeating "delayed cord clamp" until they acknowledge what I have said.  I am there to make sure you are able to benefit from ever right and joy in birth.

You should never have to be concern about anything. The Doula will make sure you are updated and informed when it is necessary. Why worry? Why not enjoy the best day of your life. Birth is an experience for you and your family enjoy it and allow the doula to support you.

Peaceful Birthing Doula is a company that Educate, Encourage, Serve and Support families in Labor, Birth and Postpartum recovery. Do not be concerned about a Doula taking a moment from you. Allow her to support you both. Enjoy and experience that you can never take back you Childs Birth.

Wow Factor!!!

WOW factor!!!

When I describe this couple the words that come to mind is WOW, exciting, loving and fun! From the moment I met them I knew they would be fun. I never knew exactly what to expect with them but one thing I knew is that they would be fun. This couple was so cute and in Love. Their story was one for the books. I giggle every time I think of their story of friendship, courtship and marriage.

I start what I thought would be a normal day. I was at a potential clients house wrapping up their first prenatal appointment when I get a call from the Mom. She was so calm "I'm just calling you to give you a heads up, I had a contraction". "I don't think you would have to be in a hurry just letting you know". I thought I would have plenty of time to finish up. I guess that is what I get for thinking. Lol!
I ask my normal questions. how do you feel? how far a part are they? where do you feel them?
I have never heard a mom in labor laughing and joking like this joyful Mom. Dad is in the back ground excited and ready to meet his Baby Boy. I could hear him speaking and laughing as well. Clearly, they did something that got the party started a little sooner. All I will say is Oxytocin is a wonderful hormone. The Midwife calls me to check in and see what my take is on the situation. We both agree we should head out. I will head to client and she will meet us at the hospital.

Every client is special and this one proves to be more than that. I told her she would give birth like a rock start after we met. I never knew that she would leave me at a loss for words. As I'm heading out to there place the husband calls me laughing still with music in the back ground saying "we may need to go straight to the hospital". As I'm speaking with them the midwife is calling telling me she just spoke with them and she advised them to go straight to the hospital.
"WAIT... WHAT??Okay!

Everyone arrives to the hospital except me. I'm still in route. I remember the midwife called me with what felt like every 15 minutes. I have never seen her so rushed. This was different for us both. Usually, I would have time and I could stop and get my regular Starbucks Venti Emperors Cloud tea and lemon loaf. As I am coming up on the Starbucks I call the midwife. " Hey I'm passing the Starbucks would you like something". I remember she said with a snicker. " Girl you better not stop this baby is coming now, we just arrived at the same time and Mom is 7cm and bag is bulging. I think I instantly started to speed all the way there. I began to get the details on Mom. The Midwife and I were shocked at the turn of events. I arrived, walked in the room, I see dad's face beaming with joy and excitement. Mom was clearly feeling the contractions now with her bottom wagging in the wind, hands and knees and rocking labor like I knew she would do. Before we could breath Mom had become complete and baby had put so much pressure on that already bulging bag that it ruptured and splattered all over the midwife and I. I have officially been christened with amniotic fluid all over my shirt. The energy in the room immediately increased. Baby had no plans of taking his time. The young man who name means King clearly had a plan to come in this world in thee most memorable way. I truly will not ever forget this day.

Mr. King you are going down in history.

My first Christening as a Doula you got to love it.

DOULA AND THE MOON

Doula and the Moon
Blood moon, Blue moon, Super moon and Full moon. Whatever the moon I welcome you.

I would love it as every Mom approached her EDD (estimated due date) if I knew there was a full moon or any special lunar event expected I would get excited. I knew something special would happen. Every labour and delivery moment is special how ever when there is a full moon or some special lunar event I just know this labour and delivery experience will be different. I know there will be a story to tell.

I remember my very first super moon baby. Oh! boy this was one for the record books for me in my Doula career. My very first home water birth. I remember when I received the call I headed out. The moment I arrived at the families house and saw the moon, it appeared to be perched so perfectly on the roof of their home as to call all of nature. A beacon it seems to let every animal know to come out and great baby Corbin.

Momma labored beautifully and strong, Hubby was anxious and excited, kids were excited and their dog was on alert and standing guard outside the bed room as to say I know he is coming. Me the Doula of course you know I was ready and excited. I couldn't get over how beautiful everything came together. It was as if the heavens were shining upon a new birth.

After guided meditation, massage and hip rocking on all fours in the pool Momma had been welcomed into labour land. We no longer existed. As morning broke right outside the window humming birds, chipmunks, lizards, geese and rabbit all came out to meet the new addition. I truly felt like I was in Bambi. It was the most beautiful thing. Baby boy was born with a hint of lavender and a lot of love in the air. Oh! how I thank the beautiful super moon for such an experience that it set into motion. That night I realized the science behind the relationship with the human and the moon, nature and the moon and now the Doula and the Moon.

Good night Moon!
I long to see you again.

Birthing from with in

Birthing from within

Every woman has her level of strength and pain tolerance. One thing I have noticed is no matter how strong or how intolerant you are to pain every woman will finish the race. Many say “labor and deliver is much like a marathon”. I can say” for some it may be a great comparison”. One thing is for sure No one has ever said I just couldn’t do it, I’ll try next time or I just didn’t know what to do. Can you imagine carrying your baby for 10 more months to try and do it again?

Delivering a baby may need some instruction or even a little bit of detail. No matter what you think baby will come out with or without your help. For some delivery is effortless. For example, I had a wonderful Mom who I worked with for her and her Husband first delivery. They called me for their second delivery and I was more than honored to be a part of this joyous occasion. This Mom has a background of athleticism and working out throughout her pregnancies. We created a game plan for the second delivery. Baby was determined to meet her parents as they were determined to meet her. I must say I didn’t know what to expect for this delivery however I will say this was the fastest delivery of all time and without much work. This Mom only pushed once and the princess came right out.

What most don’t realize is if you can find that mental peace during labor, allow your body to work for you and get in a great position your body will do what it was designed to do. If this isn’t your story that’s fine, because one thing you all do share is the end of the delivery you will never be the same.

Delivery will change you. It doesn’t matter if you labored for 1 hour or 60 hours. It doesn’t matter if you had a vaginal delivery or cesarean the results are the same. You will be changed for life. You are now a new woman. You my dear have put the WO in WO-MAN. You will be the most confident, resilient, strong and accomplished than you have ever been. Men cannot fathom carrying, delivery or caring for a child as we do. Who better to do it than you?

We have to remember we are strong and courageous. Do Not allow the thought of labor and delivery to overwhelm you. You can do it. Remember that you have support. Lean on the people around you. Focus on your inner strength. Think of what you are working for. Labor is what it Is, work. There is no way around it. Know that you were created to carry, labor, deliver and Love your Baby.

You can do this. Birthing is something that comes from within you. Get it?  Birthing comes from within?

Okay beautiful Mommies remember love yourself, love your baby, love your belly.

Enjoy these moment and journal to remind yourself of the precious kits, punches and movements.

Is a birth plan necessary?

Is a birth plan necessary?
Do you think preparing a birth plan is a  waist of time? In my opinion Never.. A Birth Plan is probably the best thing you could possibly do for this special moment. What's funny is most physicians and nurses will role their eyes at them and then there are some who welcome birth plans.

I had a family that a nurse told them on a hospital tour not to even worry about bringing one they will not even look at them. Well let's just say we are glad we didn't get her for he delivery.
Many people don't bother doing birth plans because they aren't sure where to start. this shouldn't be a reason not to do them. There are so many template's on the internet that make writing your birth plan as easy as pie. looking over the templates will help you to get an idea of what are something's you will encounter while laboring from monitoring you and baby, to delivery methods and post delivery procedures.  If your not knowledgeable of these things in advance how would you know if your okay with these methods and procedures?
I like the Earth Mama angel Baby http://blog.earthmamaangelbaby.com/birth-plan/ it is very detailed but great to use as a conversation starter with your provider.
There are so many things to consider. such as:
  1. would you like to labor at home?
  2.  what are you comfortable with if you go past your estimated due date? (stripping the membrane, teas, movement, waiting till you naturally start labor or available  schedule cesarean).
  3. would you like to stay mobile?
  4. do you want undisturbed laboring?
  5. would you like to squat or side line or lay on your back to deliver?
  6. would you like baby vaccinated at hospital?
  7. would you like baby bathed after delivery?
  8. do you want to naturally tear or have an episiotomy?
No one ever really knew that these were options. Everyone need to know their options. you deserve to be able to have a say in your birthing process.
Many hospitals may not be excited about the fact you know that you have choices. You need to be prepared and informed. Preparing a birth plan is easy. we you attend a child birth class whether it's Lamaze, Bradley, informed beginnings or
birthing you will be given advice and information on putting together your birth plan.

The beautiful part of having a birth plan is there are fewer question that need to be asked because it's already in black and white. whether you have your partner or doula present your wishes are always there and for anyone to refer back to periodically.

I always advise families to prepare a birth plan so that we can make sure mom is focused only on one thing delivery. as the Doula I should be able to refer back to the birth plan and allow mom to have undisturbed time focusing on her most important task. Delivering a baby :-) I'm there to give gentle reminders of family wishes to ensure that things haven't changed and if so we are able to review what those changes may Intel. I am also able to give provider and staff friendly reminders that there is a birth plan that can be and should be followed if they attempt to improvise when not necessary.

So, hopefully you have found value in the wonderful birth plan. If your considering conceiving this is the perfect time to start to research what labor and delivery should look like for you. Also refer back to the previous blog post it takes a village. I discuss putting your team together before conception. if you currently pregnant I hope you have looked into all the birthing classes available to you. you can find links to some classes on www.peacefulbirthingdoula.com as well as find additional blog posts.
